Leaning Back into Your Body: a Simple Somatic Practice

Embody a feeling of deep empowerment and strengthen your energetic boundaries

This is a simple but impactful somatic practice to help you bring awareness to your back body.

We often only focus on our front bodies, and we forget about our backs. But such a heavy focus on the front can lead to leaning in, both physically and energetically.

This leaning in can signal to our bodies that we are stepping out of our own power and energetic boundaries and are ready to please or appease, that we reaching or trying to hold onto something rather than practicing trust, and, we open ourselves up to absorb someone else’s energy rather than stay within our own.

It’s time to live within your power, to trust yourself, and the wisdom of your body. And so I encourage you to lean back and feel your back. Feel the energetic shift as you sit in your energy, breathe in the expansion of your self, literally acknowledging your backbone both physically and energetically, and move from that space.

So, let’s get started. I recommend being seated in a chair with a backrest to have the physical connection in the beginning, and then you can move into practicing without a physical connection later on, such as while standing or seated without a backrest. That way, you can access this practice whenever and wherever you need.

Leaning back in your chair, resting your hands, and either closing your eyes or softly unfocusing them, begin to feel your back resting against the chair. Like really feel it. Tune in and notice your lower back, middle back, upper back, and shoulders. Is there anywhere you can soften, or lengthen, or expand?

Notice how it feels to leaning back, grounded through your seat bones, and sitting up tall. Notice your energy. Embodying the sensation of trust, of boundary, of your own power.

You can softly open your eyes if they’re still closed. Let’s take a deep breath in, and an even deeper breath out.
